Aims & Scope
The Journal of Molecular Biology is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal from Directive Publications, dedicated to research on the molecular machinery of life. It publishes original work on gene expression and regulation, DNA replication and repair, RNA biology, and protein structure and function.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, methods papers, case reports, and editorials spanning molecular genetics, transcription and translation, epigenetics, non-coding RNA, and the molecular basis of disease. Studies using genome editing, sequencing, and computational structure prediction are encouraged.
Intended for molecular biologists, geneticists, biochemists, and translational researchers, the journal emphasizes rigor, reproducibility, and mechanistic insight, and every submission undergoes double-blind peer review.
Accepted articles are published open access under CC-BY 4.0, with authors retaining copyright, and each receives a permanent Crossref DOI. Content is discoverable via OpenAlex and Google Scholar and exposed through OAI-PMH; the journal follows COPE principles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What topics does The Journal of Molecular Biology cover?
The journal covers the full breadth of molecular biology, including gene expression and regulation, DNA replication and repair, RNA biology and non-coding RNA, protein structure and function, epigenetics and chromatin, CRISPR genome editing, signal transduction, and the molecular basis of disease. Methods papers on sequencing, single-cell genomics, and structural biology are also welcome.
Who should read or publish in The Journal of Molecular Biology?
It is intended for molecular biologists, geneticists, biochemists, structural and computational biologists, and translational researchers. Authors investigating molecular mechanisms of cellular function, gene regulation, or disease, and readers seeking open-access primary research in these areas, will find the journal a relevant venue.
How do I submit a manuscript to The Journal of Molecular Biology?
Submit through the journal's submission page after preparing your manuscript according to the author guidelines. The journal accepts original research articles, reviews, methods papers, case reports, and editorials in molecular biology. All submissions undergo double-blind peer review.
Is The Journal of Molecular Biology open access, and who holds copyright?
Yes. All accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, and authors retain copyright of their work. Articles are freely readable and reusable with attribution worldwide, with no subscription or paywall.
Does each article receive a DOI and how is it indexed?
Every published article is assigned a permanent Crossref DOI for stable citation. Content is discoverable via OpenAlex and Google Scholar and is exposed through an OAI-PMH endpoint for harvesting. The journal is also preparing for wider indexing applications as it grows.
What are the article-processing charges, and are waivers available?
An article-processing charge applies on acceptance to support open-access publication; there are no submission fees. Waivers and discounts are available, including for authors with limited funding. Contact the editorial office for current rates and waiver eligibility before or during submission.
What article types does The Journal of Molecular Biology accept?
The journal accepts original research articles, review articles, methods and protocol papers, short communications, case reports, and editorials. Reviews and methods papers on topics such as CRISPR, single-cell sequencing, and protein structure prediction are especially valuable for building topical depth.
How does peer review work and how is research integrity ensured?
Manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review by qualified reviewers in the relevant subfield. The journal follows COPE ethical principles covering authorship, conflicts of interest, plagiarism, and corrections, and supports data-availability and reproducibility standards to safeguard the scholarly record.
